Computer Games Created my Love of Cars

There is quite a few different things that I can point to when I try to remember exactly what contributed to my lifelong love of cars. First of all there are the stock car races that I was taken to as a child. Up on a big hill above the track you could watch for free. And I absolutely loved watching the cars race around the track, crashing into each other and really bouncing off of each other whenever they had the chance. It was totally the way that a child wanted car races to go. No following the quickest path through a corner, but leaning up against the competitor. And then I also remember the opposite end of the car racing spectrum, watching Formula 1 races every other Sunday through a lot of my childhood. Despite the races lasting for many hours sometimes, I still loved watching it, especially the first few laps when the chance of crashes was great. And when crashes did happen, it was awesome.

But it was computer games that really created my love for cars. After a lesson in woodwork class learning all about contemporary furniture, I just couldn’t wait to get home and turn on the computer console or PC and log a few hours. First it was TOCA 2, then Mario Kart, and then Grand Turismo, via Grand Theft Auto. Every car handled differently, and all I wanted to do was drive fast, and create some awesome crashes. Destruction Derby was perfect for that.
